Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser, with the Louisiana Division of Archaeology, proclaims October 2022 as Louisiana Archaeology Month. The month is an opportunity for everyone in Louisiana to learn more about the archaeology and history of the state and to protect, preserve, and enjoy these important resources of our rich cultural heritage.
“Archaeology Month gives people a glimpse at our state’s diverse archaeological treasures and provides a chance to hear from leading experts in the field,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. “I’m excited to bring awareness to Louisiana’s culture and history through archaeology.”
To celebrate Archaeology Month, the Office of Cultural Development’s Division of Archaeology hosts educational events across the state. Test your archaeology knowledge at various trivia locations, join in on crafts at local libraries, chat with experts in the field discussing archaeological sites across the state, help screen for artifacts at Poverty Point World Heritage Site, and more. You have multiple options to celebrate International Archaeology Day on Saturday, October 15.
October is also Atchafalaya Month, Louisiana Seafood Month, and Folklife Month, so be on the lookout for special surprises you can only find in October!
