Seniors who live in an independent living facility may have more freedom than seniors who contnue to stay in their homes as they age.
Older adults can face difficulties while trying to maintain a home that is meant for the living of more than one person, according to Property Manager at Monroe Housing Authority Kelly Farmer.
“At that point you may consider wanting to move into a retirement community facility such as what we offer through Monroe Housing Authority,” said Farmer.
Framer mentioned one advantage of moving into a retirement community such as one through the Monroe Housing Authority is that maintenance is taken care of by management.
Another advantage Farmer talked about was the price of rent in a retirement community may fit better with an older adult’s income.
“It’s affordable if it’s a subsidized facility like Monroe Housing provides and your rent is based on your income,” said Farmer.
Farmer discussed the social environment at a retirement community can have benefits such as gaining friendships, access to active social networks and services to help seniors keep their independence.
“We have social activities that provide you with the opportunity to maintain friendships and support through your neighbors,” said Farmer. “We partner with several aging services/agencies to come and give you resources and ways to help you maintain your independence.”
Farmer mentioned income eligibility and limitations in autonomy as the primary disadvantages of living in an independent living facility.
