Talented golfers tee it up this week in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant.

Event co-chair Cory Steagal says the women’s tournament is an elite opportunity for northeast Louisiana.  "This is one of 13 national golf championships for amateurs in the United States this year.  And Squire Creek in north Louisiana has landed that. I think that's amazing," said Steagal.

Steagal says the area is represented by two players among top competitors from around the world.  "Ashley Tonore from Monroe, she qualified to play.  Sarah Davison is also here, she was an All-American at the University of Alabama.  Ashley was All-American at LSU."

Over 130 golfers participate in the championship that begins this weekend.
