Crowds ready for start of event at Forsythe Park

Louisiana is one of the top 5 states in cases of breast cancer mortality.  On Saturday, awareness is paramount in the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure fundraiser at Forsythe Park in Monroe.

Teams and individuals participate in the 5k run and one-mile fun run.  Activities and information booths are presented near the park's stage area.

Komen Northeast Louisiana affiliate board member Lacey Miletello-McCarthy says the majority of proceeds in the signature event go directly to local research efforts.  "75 percent stays in our area, 25 percent goes toward national breast cancer research."

The day also serves as a remembrance with the "Garden of Hope".  Cancer survivors are recognized in a post-race celebration.

Prize drawings and a raffle are also featured the in event.  Registration at the park is available beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday.  Race begins at 8 a.m.
