Shining a Light on Learning: Community Unites for “Lights On Afterschool”

MONROE, LA – October 14, 2025 – The Children’s Coalition for Northeast Louisiana (CCNELA), in partnership with the Louisiana Center for Afterschool Learning (LACAL) and the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE), will host a series of family-friendly events leading up to the national “Lights On Afterschool Day.” These celebrations highlight the importance and impact of quality afterschool programs in the region.

The festivities begin with Super Saturday on October 18 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Children’s Coalition Family Garden. Families can enjoy free activities, community resources, and receive a blue light bulb to display on October 23 in support of afterschool programs.

A Lights On Afterschool Community Celebration & Proclamation follows on October 21 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo. Local officials will issue proclamations, and the first 100 children will receive free admission. Additional children’s tickets are $3.50, and adults’ tickets are $4.00.

The official 26th Annual Lights On Afterschool Day takes place on October 23, with communities encouraged to light up landmarks or display blue lights to show their support for afterschool programs nationwide.

“We’re excited to bring our community together to celebrate the life-changing power of afterschool programs,” said Deidra Adair, CCNELA Executive Director. “These events shine a light on the incredible work being done to support youth and families.”

Andrew Ganucheau, Director of OST Quality for LACAL, added, “Across Louisiana, landmarks will shine blue to show that learning continues beyond 3 p.m. Afterschool programs give children a safe space to learn, grow, and thrive.”

Launched in 2000, Lights On Afterschool remains the only nationwide event recognizing the vital role afterschool programs play in supporting children, families, and communities.
