Daily Update: EPA continues cleanup in Tangipahoa Parish, LA

DALLAS, TEXAS (Oct. 12, 2025) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ), continues its response in Roseland, Louisiana, following the August 24 fire at the Smitty’s Supply facility.

Response by the Numbers:

  • 10.5M gallons of liquid waste recovered
  • 6.6M gallons removed for disposal
  • 22,400 feet of boom deployed
  • 4,938 bales of sorbent material used
  • Over 450 personnel deployed

EPA has stabilized the site, contained runoff with earthen dams and booms, and continues to sample water and sediment in nearby rivers and ponds.

Oily waste is being recovered from surrounding ditches and stormwater channels. Contaminated soil and vegetation are being removed for off-site disposal.

EPA and LDEQ are actively engaging residents through office hours and door-to-door visits, having connected with over 1,900 community members since September.

On October 11, a sheen reported on the Tangipahoa River was investigated and found to be biological material. Out of caution, EPA deployed absorbent boom.

Upcoming EPA Community Events:

  • Hammond Air Show: Oct. 12, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • House of the Rock Church: Oct. 12, 9:45 a.m. – 11 a.m.
