Congressman Ralph Abraham, M.D., R-Alto, announced that Allison Litwin of West Monroe has won the 2019 Congressional High School Art Competition for Louisiana’s 5th District.
High school students from throughout the nation compete annually for the opportunity to have a piece of artwork displayed in the United States Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.
Litwin’s art will hang among other winners from congressional districts across the country in the Capitol for a year, beginning this summer.
Litwin will have the opportunity to visit the Capitol in June to view her painting on display. Litwin, a senior at West Ouachita High School, bested students from eight other high schools throughout the district.
Her work, titled “Which Bridge to Cross?” is an acrylic painting of the historic bridge the crosses the Ouachita River and connects Monroe and West Monroe.The painting represents the river at flood stage during the Great Flood of 2016, according to the artist.
“Allison did a terrific job capturing an iconic structure in the Monroe and West Monroe communities. I’m proud of her and all of our students who submitted such great artwork for this year’s competition,” Dr. Abraham said.
Litwin’s art teacher is Michele Olinde.
Skyler White, a junior from Ouachita Christian School, placed second for her color pencil drawing of an alligator.
Other participants included: Bethany Ates, Choudrant High School; Claire Beaubouef, Weston High School; Phoebe Brandon, Loranger High school; Chase Bryant, Jonesboro-Hodge High School; Bonnie Cooper, Riverfield Academy; Ouachita Parish High School; and Dani Marie Price, Family Community Christian School.
