"To Kill a Mockingbird" to play at ULM's Spyker Theater

The University of Louisiana Monroe’s School of Visual and Performing Arts is teaming up with The Strauss Youth Academy for the Arts, a local youth theater, to present the play “To Kill a Mockingbird” on ULM’s campus.

Performance dates are February 17 to 19 at 7 p.m. and February 20 at 2 p.m. All performances are in Spyker Theater, located on the west side of Brown Auditorium.

Admission is free to ULM students who present an ID, ULM faculty and staff is $5, and general admission is $10. Tickets are available on Eventbrite. To find the event, just search for ULM.

The play is based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” sharing her real-life experiences while living in Monroeville, Alabama

Nautica Jones, playing Calpurnia, said, “One thing that we all love was being able to see the interpretation, come through visually.”

When asked about his involvement with working with the other cast member, Wesley Curtis, who plays Jem, said, “It’s pretty fun, and it’s a lot different from doing it at the other theater because you’re actually working with people who are studying to do this.”

The ULM production staff includes director Mark Ross Clark, Ph.D., technical director Steven Burnside, costumer Margaret Hall, and producer Derle Long, Ph.D., director of the School of Visual and Performing Arts.

“The cast of the play was chosen from talented acting students at ULM and includes four gifted students from the Strauss Youth Academy for the Arts,” Clark said.
