LST-325 docked in Louisville

The USS LST (Landing Ship Tank) 325 is a restored World War II amphibious warship that will be making a voyage down the Mississippi river and stopping in Vicksburg, Mississippi on Friday.

The ship started its trip down the river in Cape Girardeau, Missouri on Monday and has Vicksburg as it's second stop on the journey.

Visitors on Friday will receive a tour of the ship as well as exhibits of artifacts from the Korean War, Vietnam War and World War II.

Jim Tuefel, a member of the board with the USS LST 325 said that they decided to make Vicksburg a stop after coming to realization that not many members aboard had been to Vicksburg before.

The ship was anchored at Omaha Beach in 1944 where it was used to transport soldiers from larger ships to smaller ones. This ship and other LST's were also used to run up on to a beach and release their front doors, which made disposing of cargo easier during wartime transport.

The warship was then used as a ship in the Greek Navy until December of 1999 when it was decommissioned.

In 2000, the USS Ship memorial gained possession of the LST 325 and it crossed the Atlantic ocean arriving in Mobile Alabama the following year.

The USS LST 325 is now only one of two LST's in the United States and calls Evansville, Indiana home where it's docked on the Ohio River.
