Esports game room built at Louisiana Delta Community College

Louisiana Delta Community College

Monroe – Louisiana Delta Community College will cut the ribbon on a new esports (electronic sports) game room at their Monroe Campus location. The addition will provide a space for students to play and keep an eye towards eventually forming a competitive team.

Esports, short for "electronic sports," refers to competitive video gaming, where professional players and teams compete against each other in various video games. Similar to traditional sports, esports involve organized tournaments, leagues, and events where players showcase their skills and compete for prizes, recognition, and sometimes even scholarships or sponsorships.

The esports industry has grown significantly in popularity over the years, with a large global audience of fans watching competitions through online streaming platforms like Twitch or in person at dedicated esports venues. Esports organizations, professional players, coaches, and analysts have become integral parts of the ecosystem, and major companies and brands have started to invest in and sponsor esports events and teams.

Chancellor Randy Esters hopes to see an LDCC team in the college's future. Organized teams exist in high schools and colleges across the United States. The college's game room provides multiple computer stations for play and a series of monitors for spectators.

Esports has evolved from a niche hobby into a mainstream form of entertainment and competitive activity, with players and spectators crossing race, culture, gender, and geography. Esports is a breeding ground for rich diversity, team spirit, and dreams of becoming a professional gamer.
