Louisiana Tech University has installed a state-of-the-art video monitoring system at its Speech Center, funded through the Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund. The system includes 12 cameras placed in therapy rooms, allowing faculty to observe clinical sessions in real time without disrupting interactions between students and clients. Sessions can also be recorded, giving students detailed feedback to improve their clinical skills.

Gary Kennedy, dean of the College of Applied and Natural Sciences, said the investment enhances student training by providing advanced tools that support hands-on learning. The project was led by retired faculty member Cheryl Leachman, whose efforts helped bring the system to completion.

Program leaders say the technology improves both instruction and client experience by maintaining a natural therapy setting while strengthening supervision. Brenda Heiman, director of the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders, said the upgrade expands training opportunities and strengthens student outcomes.

The Speech and Hearing Center provides clinical services for individuals with speech, language and hearing disorders while training future professionals. The investment reflects broader support from Weyerhaeuser, which funds education and workforce development initiatives across North America.
