Monroe's Salvation Army is set to close. It is the only overnight shelter for the homeless in the area.  The closing is temporary and the organization will be scaled-back and restructured.

The overnight homeless shelter near DeSiard Street will be closed but many social services will continue. Last year the shelter had 12,000 overnight stays.

Six local employees will lose their jobs in the reorganization. A Salvation Army spokesman says they just don't have enough money to support the current structure of the organization.

The Salvation Army of Monroe was founded in 1927. It serves a twelve parish area.
