A Louisiana creosote plant could be added to the list of America's most contaminated places. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency wants to add the American Creosote plant in Deridder to the Superfund National Priorities List.
The site in Beauregard Parish was a timber treatment facility that was contaminated by creosote related compounds.
According to the EPA, sites like this can cause risk such as birth defects and ecosystem damage. Cleanup of contamination has been shown to reduce birth defect by 25 percent.
Nationwide, EPA added seven sites to the list and has proposed adding four more for potential cleanup.
