Centenary College will exhibit visual works and poetry of its freshmen class Saturday. They started college earlier this month with a nine-day trip to Paris as part of the college’s first-year immersion experience called Centenary in Paris. Here are some observations:
“We did a lot of walking. I come from San PedroSula, Honduras. If you Google that the first thing you get it’s the most violent city in the world and it’s the murder capital. You can’t really walk on the streets. When I walked on the streets of Paris, I felt absolutely free.” – SabrinaHandalof San PedroSula, Honduras
“I’m used to going to different countries because I’m a military brat. But I just realized in Paris it was amazing, so beautiful, and I have always wanted to go there.”

“We had people asking us where we were from. We said we’re from Louisiana and they would proclaim: You’re our cousins! You’re our cousins! For the students to see their connection to these people in that way was unexpected and delightful.”

The immersion program is supported through a $100,000 humanities grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation that the college received last spring.
Saturday’s Centenary in Paris exhibition is from 3 - 5 p.m. at the Magale Library. About 150 students went on the trip. The exhibition is open to the public. Centenary in Paris perspectives piece
