Baton Rouge Mayor-President Kip Holden made it official today. He is running for Lieutenant Governor.

The current Lt. Gov, Jay Dardenne, has his eye on the governor’s mansion, but Mayor Holden was quick to dismiss the notion that he has similar ambitions.

“I want to be your next lieutenant governor because the job is not a stepping stone for me," Holden told supporters this morning. "It's not a bureaucratic outpost."

The lieutenant governor’s primary job is heading the state Dept. of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism. Holden says he’s got the relevant experience, listing accomplishments including the development of Downtown Baton Rouge, the creation of the Baton Rouge Film Commission and encouraging IBM and EA to open corporate offices to the city.

Among the people standing by Holden for his campaign announcement were State Sen. Sharon Weston Broome and State Rep. Alfred Williams. Also by his side, Metro-Councilman John Delgado, who’s hoping to be Holden’s successor.

So far, Holden is up against Jefferson Parish President John Young, State Sen. Elbert Guillory and Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser, all Republicans.
