With flood waters continuing to recede around the area, many residents are faced with the dilemma of disposing of materials that may be dangerous or hazardous to the environment. Ouachita Green is stepping up to help. The organization hosts a Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Law enforcement officers, ULM students, and volunteers will be standing by to unload waste and ensure it is properly collected. Examples of items that will be disposed of are:
- paint
- batteries
- motor oil
- anti-freeze
- household chemicals
- cleaning products
- old medications
- many types of electronics (VCRs, DVDs, televisions, etc.)
- appliances (refrigerators, microwaves, etc.)
"These are all things that we have lying around our house. Unfortunate we have probably all been guilty of putting those items into the garbage can and hoping that the garbage man will take them away and put it into the landfill -- and that's not where it belongs. It's not supposed to be there. So this gives people an opportunity -- for free -- to drop off these items, and have a team properly dispose of them," says Board Member Courtney Hornsby.
