A community mental health symposium focuses on creating resources and networking to improve outcomes in northeast Louisiana.

"I see a great need for an increase of awareness.  But for our professionals, they need increased innovative strategies and information," says Gloria Mays, executive director of Elisha Ministries in Ruston.

Presentation topics include bipolar disorder, substance abuse, and co-occurring disorders.  Mays says one of the trending aspects of the mentally ill is homelessness.  She delivers an update on the issue during the session.

In addition to guest presenters, a panel shares on Medicaid services and how to locate and receive from those programs.

The symposium is at the West Monroe Convention Center on Friday, August 14, from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.  More information available at elishaministriesnela.org.
