Long Receives Art Council's Williamson Award

Dr. Derle R. Long, director of the University of Louisiana at Monroe School of Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA), was named the Edmund Williamson Artist of the Year at the 30th Annual Northeast Louisiana Arts Council Artworks 2015 Awards ceremony.

Takei Featured As ULM Lyceum Series Speaker

George Takei, widely known for playing the character Hikaru Sulu in the popular Star Trek series, will speak at the University of Louisiana at Monroe as part of this year’s Lyceum Series, at 7 p.m., on March 31, in ULM’s Brown Auditorium.

A Patron Party will precede the event at 5 p.m., in the ULM Library Conference Center, located on the seventh floor of the ULM Library.

Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of Time" at ULM

It's not every day that you have the chance to experience a performance of Olivier Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time.  Dr. Scot Humes, University of Louisiana at Monroe associate professor of music, will perform the work at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 3 in the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall on the ULM campus.

Humes explains how the quartet came into existence and how a piece like this should be heard live, "rather than on a recording, no matter how good a CD might be."

Dr. Roger Carpenter, associate professor of history at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, is celebrating the release of his fourth book, “Times are Altered with us.” The newest title—part of the Wiley-Blackwell Native American Series—takes a look at the first three centuries of relationships between Native Americans and Europeans.

""I didn't want this story to die", says Genaro Ky Ly Smith.  The author and instructor at Louisiana Tech University reveals in explaining why he wrote about his grandfather's life. 

The Land Baron's Sun: The Story of Ly Loc and His Seven Wives, chronicles the life of Smith's grandfather in poetry.  Loc enjoyed the respect of being a South Vietnamese Army commander, but after the fall of Saigon, he experienced the pain of being imprisoned in a re-education camp.

  Students working toward a possible future degree in law get acquainted with the courtroom early as part of a Mock Trial Team.

On Saturday, January 24, The University of Louisiana at Monroe hosts the second Warhawk Mock Trial Jamboree, a two-round tournament featuring teams from ULM, Millsaps College, Louisiana State University and Tulane University.

  The work of the Medical Laboratory Scientist plays a critical role in health care, analyzing data for doctors to make informed decisions on how to treat disease.

As part of an occasional series called the Program Spotlight on the ULM Forum, we talked with Melanie Chapman, associate professor of Laboratory Science about the program.

Chapman explains the field of medical lab science is a complex one, requiring attention to detail, accuracy, and speed.

Local Certified Public Accountant John Cameron recently received the Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants’ (LCPA) 2014 Distinguished Public Service Award. Presented jointly by the LCPA and the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), the award is the highest honor for public service leadership, impact, involvement and innovation a Louisiana CPA can earn. 

  A West Monroe native, Cameron has served community organizations for over three decades. Cameron is also devoted to improving the academic, economic, and cultural climate of his community.

ULM Honors Veterans

The University of Louisiana at Monroe hosted a Veteran's Day ceremony Tuesday in the ULM Library Conference Center.  Louisiana National Guard Brigadier General Dr. Charles Chappuis gave a keynote address during the ceremony.  ULM President Dr. Nick Bruno recognized veterans in a pinning ceremony that concluded the program.

ULM, Delta Strengthen Ties
