Derle Long


Bayouval is a new music festival on the bayou at the University of Louisiana Monroe, combining the words "bayou" and "festival." The event on September 17 at Bayou Pointe Event Center raises funds for student scholarships in the School of Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA).

Dr. Derle Long, director of VAPA, expressed his enthusiasm for new the festival, "The name 'Bayouval' being the combination of a festival on the bayou is just absolutely brilliant."

With summer in full swing, many parents are trying to keep education a priority for their children during these months before school returns.

The University of Louisiana Monroe's School Visual and Performing Arts hosts several camps designed to encourage students to continue their pursuit of art as well as academics. With many camps focusing on STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Director of VAPA Derle Long says there is a great need to emphasize the importance of arts education as well.

Dr. Derle R. Long, director of the University of Louisiana at Monroe School of Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA), was named the Edmund Williamson Artist of the Year at the 30th Annual Northeast Louisiana Arts Council Artworks 2015 Awards ceremony.
