Two Ouachita Parish Library Branches Reopen Today

Two Ouachita Parish Public Library branches will reopen to the public with modified hours on Monday, May 18. The Main Branch (located at 1800 Stubbs Avenue in Monroe) and the Ouachita Valley Branch (located at 601 McMillan Road in West Monroe) will operate under the State Fire Marshal’s Open Safely guidelines. Modified hours are 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday – Saturday until further notice.

 As 18 Louisiana State Parks reopen to Louisiana residents today, visitors will have more options as previously closed campsites are reopened, new amenities are offered at a number of campsites, and a new discount code takes effect.

Site staff and in-house maintenance teams have worked to upgrade and repair facilities in order to have them available for visitors to the parks.

Bogue Chitto State Park, near Franklinton, is reopening campsites 108-118 in the bottomland campground. These 10 sites have been closed since August 2016 due to flood damages to the nearby bathhouse.

Today, Gov. John Bel Edwards formally declared that Louisiana will enter into Phase One of its Roadmap to a Resilient Louisiana on Friday, May 15, when the Stay at Home order will be lifted and more businesses will be allowed to open with strict social distancing, enhanced sanitation and required masks for employees helping the public.

City of Monroe Announces Phase One Re-openings

With Governor John Bel Edwards Stay at Home Executive Order set to expire May 15, the City of Monroe has announced plans for the Phase One re-opening of some City of Monroe operations.

The Louisiana Department of Health has updated its website to reflect the latest number of COVID-19 positives and will continue to update its website at noon each day.

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act was signed into law on March 27, by President Donald Trump.  The CARES Act Community Development Fund is based on the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) formula for Entitlement Cities.  The City of Monroe has been awarded $436,363 in CDBG funds to help address local needs.  The City of Monroe COVID-19 Small Business Enterprise Loan/Grant, Rental Assistance, and Mortgage Payment Assistance Programs.

Friday, The University of Louisiana Monroe Art Program will begin to auction off medical masterpieces. Students in the program started with a blank canvas, medical masks donated by an art alumnus. The students used dyes and paints to transform the masks into wearable masterpieces.

 "Mask Up - A Wearable Masterpiece" will be an online opportunity to support ULM's Art Society, the Delta Alpha Chapter of Kappa Pi. 25 art students created two masks each.
