GRAND ISLE, La. (AP) — A plan to build an airport in a Louisiana wildlife refuge has shocked conservationists who say it could harm important bird habitat on a coastline disappearing under encroaching Gulf of Mexico waters.

The proposal calls for paving over part of Elmer's Island Wildlife Refuge to build a commercial airport serving small jets and private planes, NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune report ed Wednesday.

The University of Louisiana Monroe campus is always changing. The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine broke ground at ULM on an anticipated medical school.  Governor John Bel Edwards, VCOM's President and Provost Dixie Tooke-Rawlins and ULM President Dr. Nick J. Bruno were all smiles as the dirt was turned.  The building will have 100,000 square feet, four floors, and several specialized facilities. It will be located on the Bayou Desiard between the Laird Weems Center and the president's home, Bon Aire.

Four months of construction work will begin Saturday on the I-10 bridge in Lake Charles. DOTD spokesman Rodney Mallet says 8.5 million dollar project will initially close the inside eastbound lane so crews can replace expansion joints on the nearly 60-year-old structure.

The joints need to replaced because the I-10 Lake Charles bridge will take on more traffic when a re-decking project gets underway on I-210. Mallett says it’s also just time to replace the joints, because they’ve been known to go out over the years.

The Department of Transportation announced construction will begin this summer in West Monroe to widen a 3.2 mile stretch of Arkansas Road between LA 143 and Caldwell Road. DOTD Spokesperson Marshall Hill says the road will be turned into four lanes and a center turn lane will be added to help alleviate traffic.

Marshall Hill says “this is an area of West Monroe that’s built up over recent years, especially with the three schools.”
