Workers have begun construction on a new solar project in southeast Arkansas that’s expected to produce enough electricity to power more than 18,000 homes once it’s up and running.

The Chicot Solar Energy Center near Lake Village is a project of NextEra Energy Resources and Entergy Arkansas. They say the project will be larger than the Stuttgart Solar Energy Center, which came online in 2018 and was Arkansas’ largest universal solar energy project at the time.

Weakened Barry Still Poses Flood, Tornado Risks

Even though Tropical Depression Barry did not unleash catastrophic flooding in Louisiana, many across the Gulf Coast were urged to take heed of tornado and flash-flood warnings Monday as the storm moved north.

Barry was downgraded from a tropical storm on Sunday afternoon but continued to pose a threat. Much of Louisiana and Mississippi were under flash-flood watches, as were parts of Arkansas, eastern Texas, western Tennessee and southeastern Missouri.

The first two medical marijuana vendors in Arkansas sold over 26 pounds of the drug during the first few days of sales, the state Department of Finance and Administration said Tuesday.

Arkansas' medical marijuana program officially debuted on Friday, joining 33 other states that allow certain patients to buy weed. The two Hot Springs dispensaries, Green Springs Medical and Doctor's Orders RX, are charging $15 per gram the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported.

Authorities say two toddlers survived alone for about two days after they were passengers in a wreck that killed their mother in south Arkansas. The Ouachita County Sheriff's Office says a 3-year-old boy was found Monday wandering in Camden, about 85 miles southwest of Little Rock.

Police then discovered a car in a ravine not visible from the road. The toddler's mother was found dead, and his 1-year-old brother awake and alert in his car seat. That child is being treated for dehydration.

Officials at a small municipal airport in central Arkansas are battling an unlikely foe - coyotes that keep chewing on part of the taxiway.

 The damage at the North Little Rock Municipal Airport is expected to cost $6,000 to fix. Engineer Blake Roberson tells the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that the coyotes have a fondness for chewing on the silicone-based joints on a concrete ramp and taxiway.

Authorities in rural Arkansas are investigating the theft of more than $50,000 worth of equipment from a farm owned by former NBA star Scottie Pippen. Investigator Mark Griever of the Ashley County Sheriff's Office says two tractors were stolen from the farm in Hamburg, Griever says Pippen owns the livestock farm with his brother.

Arkansas health officials say the level of hydrogen sulfide gas near a Georgia-Pacific paper mill in southeastern Arkansas is below levels that determine if the air is safe to breathe but frequently above levels where the odor can be detected.

 The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that air monitoring at the mill in Crossett, located 128 miles (206 kilometers) southeast of Little Rock, was conducted after it significantly reduced emissions of the compound that is common to paper mills. The Georgia-Pacific mill has reduced its emissions 42 percent since 2012. 

3 Dead After Medical Helicopter Crash In Eastern Arkansas

Officials say a medical helicopter has crashed in rural Arkansas, killing all three people on board.

The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management confirms the helicopter went down Sunday night near the Arkansas County town of DeWitt, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) southeast of Little Rock.

 Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford says the aircraft was flying from Pine Bluff to DeWitt at the time of the wreck. Lunsford says no patients were on board.
