State Grappling With Slow Population Growth

cenlamar.com

Louisiana's population growth has seen a slight increase since the 2010 Census.  New figures show the state has only seen a 2.6 percent increase in the past four years.

"That's nowhere near the growth we'd need to have seen over the past few years, to keep from getting into a situation where we could potentially lose another congressional seat," said demographer Eliot Stonecipher.

The state went from seven to six congressional districts as a result of the 2010 Census.  Stonecipher says a constant problem is out-migration.  "It is eating up the margin, if you will,  of the rate of births over deaths. That's when the alarm starts sounding over where population numbers are headed," he said.

South Louisiana parishes show the best numbers in the latest figures.  East Baton Rouge is the highest populated parish.  Since 2010, Ascension, Orleans, and St. Bernard parishes have been the fastest growing in the state.
