Songs of Survivors Helps Vets Through Music

Mar 26, 2019

The Louisiana Office of Cultural Development, in concert with Baton Rouge Music Studios, and the National Endowment for the Arts, announces two workshops designed to provide veterans with the opportunity to learn the craft of songwriting. The Songs of Survivors workshops will be led by professional educators, songwriters, and touring musicians.

“These workshops will serve as a supportive way to allow our veterans to tell their service-related stories through lyrics and music in a safe and empowering environment,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. “We are honored to be able to provide an avenue for the men and women who protect our freedom to find healing through music as they face the pressures of reintegrating to civilian life.”

The Songs of Survivors workshops are scheduled for Saturday, April 6, in Baton Rouge, and Saturday, April 27, in Lake Charles. The workshops will be led by Nashville Star alumnus, and U.S. Veteran, David St. Romain from Alexandria, LA; Doug Gay, a seasoned session and touring musician; and, Sarah Burke, an accomplished songwriter with years of music education experience.

David St. Romain will led the participants in creating content for the songs and developing them by drawing out information from their experiences then organizing those ideas into verses and choruses. Doug Gay, founder of Baton Rouge Music Studios, will record the songs, creating additional music tracks to bring the songs to life then mixing the songs to distribute to participants. Sarah Burke, director and lead teacher at Baton Rouge Music Studios, will work with participants on creative writing and rhyming in order to structure their lyrics so the message comes across in just the right way.

“Music provides an emotive experience that can arouse feelings, can help express things that sometimes are hard to put into words, and helps soothe the soul,” said Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Joey Strickland. “I’m confident that veterans will appreciate the opportunity to participate in a music program like Songs for Survivors, and I am grateful to the Louisiana Office of Cultural Development, Baton Rouge Music Studios, and the National Endowment for the Arts for helping to promote the arts to Louisiana’s veterans through these events.”
