Pharmacists Key to Team of Health Care Providers

American Pharmacists Association - Academy of Student Pharmacists
ULM student pharmacists will offer health screenings at the Heart Walk on October 31.

Pharmacists counsel patients 10 million times each day, serving as key players in the health care system.

October is American Pharmacists Month. Sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association, the goal of APhM is to draw attention to the pharmacy profession and generate recognition for pharmacists among their peers, patients and communities.

Every year the American Pharmacists Association – Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) creates a national theme to encourage and advocate for the profession of pharmacy, and the ULM School of Pharmacy has joined the movement. This year’s theme is “Live Your Why.”

Your pharmacist is a valuable health care resource

As part of this campaign, the ULM chapter of APhA-ASP partnered with Xavier University to host a statewide campaign through the month of October.

Together, ULM and Xavier are sharing facts about the medical needs of Louisiana and how Louisiana pharmacists are making a difference.

"Your pharmacist is a valuable health care resource," says Adam Pate, associate profess of Clinical Sciencs in Pharmacy at ULM. "They offer services such as vaccinations, patient counseling on prescriptions, smoking cessation, as well as offering helpful information on Medicare and Medicaid plans which can often be confusing to patients."

Pate explains that pharmacists serve as a source for both prescriptions and over-the-counter medications. and that patients should feel comfortable consulting with their pharmacist before combining medicines.
