The Children's Room at the Monroe Symphony League Book Fair is fully stocked for the first sale of the summer.

With summer fully underway, many people are looking for the next good book to help them pass the time. Keeping that in mind, the Monroe Symphony League is holding a Book Fair this weekend, June 4 and 5, and next weekend June 11 and 12.

The book sale helps fund the Symphony League's projects throughout the year. Other projects the League sponsors include: the annual "Sound Safari" for local schools, the "Marjorie Stricklin Emerging Artist Competition", and the new formed "New Music on the Bayou Festival" which is currently underway.

From fiction to non-fiction, religious texts to cookbooks, the Book Fair offers a wide variety of genres and publications, all of which are donated to the league throughout the year. This month features over 400 jigsaw puzzles, in addition to an extensive collection of current magazines and art prints -- all at a discounted price.

"The kids are out of school now, which means that they will want to cut back on their reading, but if you come and buy a couple of boxes of books the children can keep up with their reading throughout the summer," says Book Fair representative Scott Legan.

A colorful section of children's book offers parents an opportunity to encourage summer reading, and a chance for children to shop for their own books without fear of sticker shock. Next to the Children's Room, the Music Room offers all types of audio recordings form old records to cassette tapes, and from classical to jazz to comedy albums.

Doors open at 9 a.m. on Saturday and there is a first-day fee of $2 which pays for the upkeep of the old city bakery building on 4th Street which the Book Fair calls home. The sale continues until 5 p.m. Sunday's hours are from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Kirby Rambin is a natural entertainer, having played violin since the age of 9 and performing publicly since he was just 12. As a teen, he performed with the Monroe Youth Symphony and the Louisiana All-State Orchestra.
