The Monroe Symphony League (MSL) is hosting its annual book room fundraiser this Saturday, Oct. 5, and Sunday, Oct. 6; then again Friday, Oct. 11, and Saturday, Oct. 12, at the old city bakery on 320 North Fourth Street in Monroe.

The entrance fee is $2 per adult on the first day only. The remaining dates are free to the public.

MSL is a local non-profit that was created to raise money for music education in Ouachita Parish. Since its founding, MSL has offered several music opportunities for children in the community such as The Sound Safari and the Marjory Strickland Emerging Artist Competition.

The Sound Safari gives children in schools the opportunity to learn about classical instruments and touch them for the first time while the Emerging Artist Competition gives the young winner a chance to play with the Monroe Symphony Orchestra.

Mark Henderson, a member of MSL, says, "These programs are meant to introduce and encourage a new generation of audience. We have to go into the classrooms or bring them to us to get classical music to the children." The book room sale is one of MSL's most popular fundraisers for events that expose children to the world of symphonic music.

This year, the book room will feature a number of genres including Religion, Mystery, Classics, and even sheet music. Along with literature, there will also be CD's and DVD's for customers to purchase. All proceeds will go towards funding for MSL and its mission of music education.

The dates for the MSL's book room sale are:

  • Saturday, October 5         9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Sunday, October 6            1 p.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Friday, October 11            9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 12       9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
