https://www.weather.gov/shv/

Monroe, Louisiana and the surrounding areas are to expect heavy storms starting today and lasting throughout the week.

Areas of widespread rain, with brief thunderstorms and moderate to heavy showers will continue to move to the northeast across the area through late morning. Flooding does not appear to be a huge threat at this time, but residents should expect periods of heavy rainfall to increase later today.

Some minor ponding of water may occur on roadways this morning. Rainfall amounts through noon will range from near a quarter of an inch to as much as one inch or more in isolated areas.

Due to the heavy weather expected later in the day, Monroe mayor, Jamie Mayo, and the Monroe City Council will open up “self-fill” Sandbagging Operations in case there is heavy flooding. These operations will be located at Saul Adler Rec. Center, Marbles Rec. Center, and Emily P. Rec Center. The Public Works Department will provide shovels, sand, and bags for residents to fill their bags.

The City of Monroe Public Works Department is urging residents to ensure that all debris is cleared from yards, ditches, curb sides and drainage grates, etc. This precaution will prevent localized flooding and let the water flow/drain properly.

Flooding is a safety hazard and certain precautions are in encouraged to protect lives. The National Weather Services urges residents to not drive vehicles through flooded waterways, use caution when walking near flooded riverbanks and not to try to wade or swim in flooded rivers and bayous.
