MedCamps, La. Tech Design Students Partner for Accessible Play

Louisiana Tech University

Students from Louisiana Tech University’s School of Design recently partnered with MedCamps of Louisiana, Inc., to help the campers have an even better experience at camp.

Louisiana Tech students worked to design and construct a Chiasmus archery and paintball range. The project is a barrier-free, wheelchair-accessible pavilion and gathering space for MedCamps that facilitates archery and paintball activities at the camp.

Tech School of Design faculty involved include assistant professor Brad Deal and associate professor Robert Brooks. Students who assisted were: Erin Baker, Bikash Baraily, Bradley Burkart, Lauren Caswell, Elizabeth Crane, Casey Fair, Trent Harrison, Ashley Kettering, Andrew Lopez, Sean McGowan, Alaina Proctor, Matthew Roberts and Kendell Webb.

Students in the architecture program’s Design Build studios have partnered with other organizations in Lincoln Parish to design and build structures ranging from homes for Habitat for Humanity to park pavilions around Ruston. Last year, the students produced the Larkin Gibbs Memorial Pavilion and Gardens at MedCamps.

MedCamps of Louisiana is a non-profit organization that provides a series of fun-filled summer camps for children in the state who have various physical and/or mental disabilities. The camps are offered free of charge and provide campers with an opportunity to participate in traditional camping activities such as canoeing, fishing, swimming, and horseback riding in a modified setting to meet the needs of each camper.

MedCamps is hosted at Camp Alabama in Sibley, which is a property of the Presbytery of the Pines.
