Senator Bill Cassidy’s Vote — Yesterday Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana joined Democrats in voting against ending former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, a surprise reversal. Cassidy was among six Republican senators who sided with Democrats on the question of whether a former president can be tried after leaving office. The Louisiana senator’s position was a switch from January, when he voted to end the proceedings on the grounds that they were unconstitutional. Cassidy explained to CNBC Cable News the reasons behind his vote.
"The House Managers were focused, they were organized. They relied on both precedent, the Constitution, and legal scholars, they made a compelling argument," Cassidy explained. "President Trump's team were disorganized, they did everything they could butto talk about the question at hand. And when they talked about it, they kind of glided over it almost as if they were embarrassed of their arguments. Now I'm an impartial juror and one side is doing a great job and the other side is doing a terrible job on the issue at hand, as an impartial juror I'm going to vote for the side that's did the good job."
The Louisiana GOP has issued a statement saying the party was “profoundly disappointed” in the senator.
