Krewe of Janus Sails With Jean Lafitte

Krewe of Janus
Captain's Float Krewe of Janus Mardi Gras 2015

The Krewe of Janus embarks on their 33rd Mardi Gras Parade this Saturday, carrying a theme of "Jean Lafitte's Treasure" with them.

Janet Breard, one of the original members of the organization, explains the history of the Krewe of Janus. The Krewe held its first parade in 1984, and has been cultivating both the Mardi Gras spirit and the tradition ever since.

Breard recounts the Krewe's success, "We took Mardi Gras -- and all of it's basics about Louisiana culture -- and brought it to North Louisiana. Now we have children that are using Mardi Gras for their social studies projects."

The festivities kick off Saturday morning at Pecanland Mall for the Children's Parade at 10 a.m. with registration at 9:30. The Krewe then moves to Antique Alley in West Monroe for the Pet Parade at 1:30 pm.

"We always want this to be a family adventure for the whole weekend," says Breard.

The Parade begins at 6 p.m. in West Monroe and follows the same route as last year, down Walnut Street. to Desiard.
