Leslie Keen, director of community relations at People’s Health, said getting involved in the community and being socially active will help make the New Year happier for seniors.

Seniors should make their selves a priority, according to Keen. She explained that studies show that being socially active such as being involved in the community and volunteering can improve their health as well as the way they feel about their self.

Anita Sharma, program director of the University of Louisiana Gerontology Program, explained that a senior’s lifestyle once they retire.

“By the time people reach 65 or 70 years of age, a lot of them have retired. And that changes the lifestyle,” said Anita Sharma.

Keen suggested that seniors should base their schedule off of things that they are interested in once they are in retirement.

“They can set up their schedule based off of where their interest lies, so if they want to volunteer at the library because they like books and they like being around other people, make it a priority,” said Keen. “Set the appointment. Make the phones calls. Don’t just say I’m going to be more socially active by calling my friends more often.”

“And schedule it on a regular basis, so you can have something to look forward to,” Keen added.

Keen explained that technology such as Facetime, Skype and social media allows older adults to keep in touch with family and old friends without having to leave the house.

When it comes to a senior’s physical health, exercising is important but being socially active will increase a senior’s involvement in activities, according to Keen.

“Being socially engaged will increase your physical activity,” said Keen. She explained that local senior centers offer many classes and activities for seniors to participate in.
