DELTA VARIANT RISING - According to the most recent data from the Louisiana Department of Health, Louisiana has the highest infection rate per-capita in the nation. As of yesterday there are 11,109 positive cases on 81,000 tests, there are 1,984 in-hospital covid patients and 28 Covid related deaths reported . Governor John Bel Edwards made an announcement yesterday afternoon regarding the LDH’s data.
"We're the worst in the country in terms of this Covid surge and that is because of the Delta variant which is a game changer," Edwards said. "And the fact that quite frankly not enough people have been vaccinated here in Louisiana."
Edwards stressed that the rate of infection, hospitalizations and deaths will likely increase in the days ahead and with that in mind he is reinstating a mitigation measure.
"So today I am temporarily reinstating the Louisiana statewide mask mandate for all people both vaccinated and unvaccinated when they are indoors and in public," Edwards explained.
The Louisiana statewide mask mandate will go in effect on Wednesday. The mandate applies for for both vaccinated and unvaccinated residents in all indoor locations, including schools and colleges. It will apply to anyone age 5 and older who enters a business, school, church or other inside location.. Edwards’ order will last until Sept. 1, but could be extended.
