Louisiana officials have crafted a three-year plan aimed at improving the state's school for deaf students and other state-run special schools.
Changes were discussed Tuesday by the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. They stem from a 2018 report calling for a management overhaul in the Special School District. The Advocate reports the district oversees 1,800 students.
It contains the School for the Deaf and the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired in Baton Rouge; the Louisiana Special Education Center in Alexandria; and several correctional facility sites.
Goals for the 2019-20 school year include crafting individual school improvement plans, evaluating personnel based on updated job descriptions and enacting a consistent school curriculum statewide.
Other planned changes include adding career and technical education classes that can improve students' job prospects.
