Lake Charles Police Chief Don Dixon says a former Angola inmate is responsible for a shooting that killed a 10-year-old boy and severely injured his 17-year-old brother. Dixon says 50-year-old Felton Thompson faces numerous charges, including first-degree murder and he’s already served time for an armed robbery that took place over two decades ago.

Dixon says Thompson was arrested early Wednesday morning at the Hyatt Hotel attached to the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans. The police chief is asking for the public’s help to figure out why he shot these kids at a home in Lake Charles.

Thompson was sentenced in the 1990s to 99 years in prison for armed robbery and other offenses. He was paroled last year. Calcasieu Parish District Attorney John DeRosier is troubled by Thompson’s release from prison and this could happen again, because of new legislation designed to reduce the state’s incarceration rate.
