An investigation is underway following the death of an Elayn Hunt Correctional Center inmate

BATON ROUGE, La. – BATON ROUGE, La. – Possible criminal charges are pending following the Sunday's death of an Elayn Hunt Correctional Center inmate. Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Deputies and Department of Corrections are investigating the death. The inmate died shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday at the prison.

The deceased inmate and his cellmate were apparently involved in an altercation inside the cell Sunday afternoon. Correctional officers making routine rounds discovered the unresponsive inmate inside the cell shortly after 1 p.m. Correctional officers immediately began CPR and attempted to revive him. He was pronounced dead at 2:12 p.m.

An autopsy has been requested by the Department to determine the cause of death. Possible criminal charges are pending the outcome of the investigation and the autopsy. Pending notification of next of kin and an ongoing investigation, names of the deceased and his cellmate are not being released, and no further details are available at this time.
