Suspended deputy constable allegedly didn't act to stop rape

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A deputy constable for one of New Orleans' city courts has been suspended while authorities investigate a complaint that he didn't act when a witness told him a woman was being raped.

New Orleans news outlets say the incident happened when the man was on a private duty security detail in the French Quarter last month.

The deputy constable's suspension was announced after the New Orleans Police Department superintendent held a news conference to refute early reports that a city police officer had refused to respond. The deputy works for New Orleans' 2nd City Court.
