Morehouse Parish Arson Suspect Arrested

State agriculture commissioner Mike Strain announces the arrest of a suspected serial arsonist in Morehouse Parish. Strain alleges between July 20th and August 3rd, 55-year-old Philbert Bowers of Bastrop intentionally set several wildlife fires near the Arkansas state line.  The fires burned nearly 28 acres and fire officials suspect they were set on July 22. 

Strain says Bowers was arrested on 4 counts of arson by the Department of Agriculture and Forestry and  3 counts of arson by the Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Office.

NEW IBERIA, La. (AP) — Authorities say two separate boaters have died in Louisiana.

 News outlets report the bodies of 58-year-old Leonard Norbert and 66-year-old Milton B. Gomez were both recovered Saturday.

 Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman Maj. Wendell Raborn says Norbert and his boat were found in the Atchafalaya Basin. A search for the New Iberia man had begun when he didn't check in during a fishing tournament he was participating in.

The Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana been chosen as one of the Top 200 nationwide finalists for the State Farm Neighborhood Assist grant program. If the Food Bank makes the Top 40 most voted causes, it will use the $25,000 grant to expand Senior programs to provide over 200 more low income senior citizens with a monthly box of food. The Food Bank needs the support of the entire community to get the votes it will take to win!

Winn Parish – Yesterday evening, a crash involving two vehicles killed a man and a woman from Monroe, LA. Both were wearing a seat belt.

investigating the attempted burglary of Outlaw Ordinance in West Monroe that occurred during the early morning hours of July 27, 2018. 

 

Authorities are asking for anyone with any information regarding the identity of the suspects pictured is asked to contact the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office at 318-329-1200.

 

West Monroe Shooting Sends Woman To Hospital

Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of a shooting in the 100 block of Keller St. in West Monroe at approx. 9:30 p.m. Sunday evening, July 22nd. 

Upon arrival, deputies determined a female victim had been shot in the hip and she was transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. 

The woman assaulted at a Louisiana car wash last week has died.

Ferriday Police Investigator Richard Madison told the Natchez Democrat on Thursday that Teresa Poole succumbed to her injuries. He said he was told about her death that morning by the coroner and didn't have any other information yet.

The May 9 attack was captured on security video, which Madison says led to the arrest Tuesday of 20-year-old Donteale K. Carter, who has a Friday morning hearing on a charge of second-degree battery.

Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement trucks patrol for unseen dangers.

Ouachita Parish will vote this weekend on a tax renewal to fund the Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement District. The mosquito abatement scientist monitor dangerous diseases spread by insects such as Zika, West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis, Yellow Fever and others. 

The tax renewal generates nearly 2 million dollars per year that is used in scientific insect control and disease monitoring. The area is sprayed by trucks and airplanes when mosquito numbers meet certain criteria.  The last major mosquito disease outbreak was a West Nile outbreak in 2001.

Heavy rainfall will move into north Louisiana Tuesday night and stick around until Friday. The National Weather Service says total rainfall may be 4-6" with flash flooding and river flooding possible. 

These storms will develop along a slow moving cold front. In addition to rain, the system could produce damaging winds and hail. 

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect until 7 a.m.  Thursday and a Flood Warning remains for the Ouachita River until further notice.
