On August 2, 2018 at approximately 7:20 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a fatal crash involving a bicyclist on LA 548 in Jackson Parish.

The preliminary investigation revealed 53-year-old Clint Caraway of Eros was riding a Trek bicycle westbound on LA 548 in the lane of travel. At the same time, 64-year-old Shelby Berry of Eros was driving a 2005 GMC Yukon westbound on LA 548 behind Caraway. Berry’s Yukon struck the year of the bicycle in the lane of travel. After impact, Caraway was thrown from the bicycle into a ditch.

Despite the fact that he was wearing safety helmet, Caraway was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jackson Parish Coroner’s Office. A toxicology sample was obtained from Caraway and will be submitted for analysis. Berry was not injured during the crash and impairment was not a factor on her part. Vision obscurement (setting sun) may have been a factor, and this crash remains under investigation.

In 2018, Troop F has investigated 22 fatal crashes resulting in 26 deaths.
