Strauss Theatre Center is bringing "Young Frankenstein," which was adapted from film to musical by creator Mel Brooks, to life September 13, 14, 15, 16, 21 and 22. The musical opens the 87th season at Strauss.

"Young Frankenstein" tells the story of Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, grandson of the infamous Dr. Victor Frankenstein. The young doctor is established in New York and wants nothing to do with his family history, choosing to call himself "Fronk-en-steen." However, Dr. Frederick is called to Transylvania to take care of the family estate after the death of his grandfather. When he arrives, he is met with his old friend Igor, who now goes by "Eye-gore." Dr. Frankenstein spends his first night in the castle haunted by nightmares and ghosts of his family past. After exploring the castle further, the doctor finds his grandfather's medical laboratory, and hilarity ensues.

"A lot of the classic lines from the movie are definitely in the play," says actor Benjamin Gross, who plays the young Dr. Frankenstein. The original 1974 movie was directed by Mel Brooks and starred Gene Wilder, Gene Hackman, and Peter Boyle. Much of the comedy featured is not suitable for children.

Strauss Theatre is having auditions for "The Cover of Life" by Ronn Robinson August 27 and 28. The straight play is set in Sterlington, Louisiana around the time of WWII. The play follows the story of three wives whose husbands have gone to war. When their work to keep the home fires burning is noticed by Henry Luce, he decides they deserve to be on the cover of Life Magazine.
