Research monkey missing from university in Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — A research monkey is missing from a center operated by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

News outlets reported that the school said the Rhesus macaque was discovered missing because of a cage failure Saturday at the New Iberia Research Center.

The school said the monkey weighs about 12 pounds. It says the animal was part of a breeding group and does not have any transmissible disease.

UL-Lafayette said the animal was seen near an arena Sunday morning and ran into some woods. School personnel are trying to find the animal and warned the public to call for help rather than approach it.
