Aging is a transitional process.

The Gerontology Lecture Series commemorates Older Americans' Month Wednesday, May 2 at noon in the SUB Ballroom B on the ULM campus. The panel discussion features Dean Ron Berry, Dean H. Glenn Anderson, Jr., and Vice President Dr. Eric Pani.

"Our gerontology program has been working hard all year to increase exposure of the program and the opportunities available," says Dr. Ron Berry, Dean of the College of Business and Social Sciences. "This panel discussion is about men in the care-taking world." According to Dr. Berry, women are usually thought of as the ones who care for their aging parents. Each of the panelists has personal experience helping care for an elderly family member.

"Sometimes hearing what other people have gone through can be helpful." - Dr. Ron Berry

Change comes with age, and the panel looks to address some of these changes. "In my experience with my mom, she wasn't able to drive, which meant we had to help her with daily activities such as groceries, transportation, and doctor appointments," says Dr. Berry.

Problems may also arise with housing, daily care, loneliness, and depression. The panel offers advice on how caretakers can recognize the signs and help alleviate these issues. "Sometimes hearing what other people have gone through can be helpful."
