What do you do with tattered old American flags? Military etiquette dictates that worn flags be burned in a “retirement ceremony.” The burning is to symbolize purification and rebirth when performed.
On Tuesday, December 12, The Chennault Aviation and Military Museum will hold a solemn flag retirement program at 6:00 p.m. The ceremony will be performed by representatives from veterans’ organizations and first responders.
The Chennault Aviation and Military Museum has partnered with Hemline Monroe to present an American flag retirement ceremony to help ensure that our community’s tattered, faded flags are retired in a dignified and respectful manner. The joint effort aims to also encourage citizens to replace worn flags with new flags.
Adrianne LaFrance-Wells says, "We’re encouraging home owners and businesses to display the flag in a manner that’s fitting to the wonderful country it represents. Our campaign also serves to improve the community’s overall image and patriotic spirit. This will not only honor our veterans, but also leave a positive impression on visitors to our area. "
Unserviceable flags can be dropped off at the Hemline Monroe or the museum from now until December 11th during business hours. Worn flags can also be brought to the ceremony.
New, quality flags can be purchased at the Chennault Museum and Hemline with proceeds benefitting the museum. The ceremony will be held during the museum’s annual member Christmas party. Please see the attached press release for additional details.
