The first meeting of 100 Who Care NELA is at Flying Tiger Brewery Monday, May 14 at 5:30 p.m. The organization looks to support local non-profit organizations through micro crowd-funding.
The concept is simple: 100 people gather together, and each donates $100. By the end of an hour-long meeting, $10,000 has been raised. "We open up nominations to 501(c)(3) non-profits that serve the local area, and before the meeting, we choose 3 at random," says Camille Pearce of 100 Who Care NELA. "The organizations speak to the members at the meeting. Members donating that day vote on which non-profit receives the money."
There are a few regulations on what type of organization can register. Non-profits must serve the local area, which includes Monroe, West Monroe, and Ruston, and the organization must not be politically or religiously affiliated.
"There are needs in this community that grassroots efforts can help reduce," says Puneet Sharma of 100 Who Care NELA. According to Sharma, the idea for this organization came from the Alexandria chapter of 100 Who Care Women, which has over 100 members.
100 Who Care NELA is a group of Northeast Louisiana philanthropists who want to make a difference in our community through micro crowdfunding. Non-profit organizations have until midnight May 10 to register for nomination. More information about this organization is available here.
