Dr. George T. Walker left a legacy. As fourth president of Northeast Louisiana State College, later Northeast Louisiana University, he improved campus life for every member of the faculty, staff and students.
Walker is credited with growing enrollment from 2,000 in the late 1950’s to over 9,000 by the mid 1970’s, increasing both the quality of and compensation to faculty, and adding more than a dozen academic buildings and residence halls to the campus.
Well into his retirement, Dr. Walker remained among ULM’s greatest cheerleaders and was a familiar face at many Warhawk football games and other important university events.
A founding pillar of the university, Walker accomplished much, inspired many and directly enriched higher education for generations.
Walker died on June 19 at age 98.

This week, four university presidents gathered to discuss the life and legacy of Dr. Walker. University of Louisiana at Monroe President Dr. Nick J. Bruno joined Dr. Dwight D. Vines in the KEDM studios, while Lawson Swearingen and Dr. James Cofer contributed to the conversation via conference call.
