In cities and towns across the nation, teachers, librarians, athletes, parents, and others are hosting Read Across America activities to bring the excitement of reading to children.
The whole purpose of this program is to show kids that everybody loves to read. According to Dr. Ruth Smith kids develop a greater appreciation for books when an adult or somebody older reads it to them. When kids read more it has been proven to boost their standardized test scores. This program is an important tool to help fight illiteracy across America.
The Read Across America tour comes to Pecanland Mall, and students and faculty from the University of Louisiana at Monroe will be reading to students from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
