When severe weather threatens an area, one of the most useful tools for forecasters is radar. As technology has improved, these radar images are now used for everything from warning about danger from flooding or tornadoes, to estimating rainfall over cropland.

Case Hanks Hopper
The University of Louisiana at Monroe is in the final stages of approval for a new radar array, with funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.

Dr. Ann Case Hanks is an associate professor of Asmospheric Science and Dr. Larry Hopper is an assistant professor in the department. They say the new array could be a great help for emergency preparedness as well as a tool for students in atmospheric science.
