When one political party takes hold of a state legislature, many assume that party will control the legislative agenda. However, it’s not always the case.

Two political science professors at the University of Louisiana at Monroe recently presented a paper at the Southern Political Science Association focusing on how ideology can still fracture a party in power.

Drs. John Sutherlin and Joshua Stockley explain some of the expectations that people had of the Republican legislature, and how things turned out differently.
