Cordova

A passion for problem solving can lead to a number of professions. For Dr. Jose Cordova, that passion led him to the classroom, and to the computer. Cordova is the program chair for Computer Science and the Kitty DeGree Endowed Professor in Computer Science at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

He is from San Salvador, El Salvador. Cordova arrived in the U.S. as a student on January 1985.

In high school he enjoyed mathematics and computer science.

As a teen he played the guitar in a rock-and-roll band.

Cordova always enjoys listening to music especially the Beatles and music from the 1960s.

His favorite spot at University of Louisiana at Monroe is Starbucks.

His favorite thing about his job is the expression in the students' faces when difficult concepts become clear as a result of the classroom experience.

One of his proudest accomplishments is being selected as the Outstanding Faculty Member for the College of Arts & Sciences in 2003.

If his students were to leave his classroom knowing only one thing, it would be that in the end, it's what you want to learn that counts. Learn to learn and practice learning every day. Learning never ends.

He believes in doing whatever it takes to accomplish the objectives of the day's lesson, even if it involves standing on top of a student's desk to make a point.
