Bayou Diversity 2/20/2012 - Passenger Pigeons

3:30 minutes (2.41 MB)     Download Bookmark and Share

On November 20, 1869, an entry in a Monroe newspaper noted, " The wild pigeons are making their way southward. We have seen several flocks flying over."

Not to be confused with the feral rock pigeons common in city parks and native to Europe, the subject of this article was the passenger pigeon, perhaps the most abundant bird in the world at one time.
